Chapter 15: The Demigods Appeal to the Lord for Protection
Text 1.15.10
नैनं सूर्यः प्रतपति पार्श्वे वाति न मारुतः।
चलोर्मिमाली तं दृष्ट्वा समुद्रोऽपि न कम्पते॥
nainaṁ sūryaḥ pratapati pārśve vāti na mārutaḥ
calormi-mālī taṁ dṛṣṭvā samudro ’pi na kampate
na = not; enam = in front of him; sūryaḥ = Sūrya; pratapati = does burn; pārśve = in his presence; vāti = does blow; na = not; mārutaḥ = Vāyu; cala-ūrmi-mālī = with its moving waves; tam = him; dṛṣṭvā = seeing; samudraḥ = the ocean; api = even; na = not; kampate = does move.
Sūrya does not burn in front of him. Vāyu does not blow in his presence. Seeing him, the ocean with its moving waves does not move.
When Rāvaṇa roams around his sporting mountains, the sun becomes mild in his rays. The wind does not blow over the flower gardens out of fear that the flowers might fall off. Though the ocean is naturally possessed of moving waves, it does not move out of fear that Rāvaṇa might spring up and pridefully dry up the ocean.
