Text 1.31.17
तं प्रयान्तं मुनिवरमन्वयादनुसारिणम्।
शकटीशतमात्रं च प्रायेण ब्रह्मवादिनाम्॥
taṁ prayāntaṁ muni-varam anvayād anusāriṇam
śakaṭī-śata-mātraṁ ca prāyeṇa brahma-vādinām
tam = that; prayāntam = who walked; muni-varam = excellent sage; anvayāt = followed; anusāriṇam = [in front] towards the north; śakaṭī-śata-mātram ca = a hundred carts; prāyeṇa = of mostly; brahma-vādinām = Vedic reciters.
A hundred carts of mostly Vedic reciters followed that excellent sage who walked [in front] towards the north.
A hundred Vedic reciters accompanied Viśvāmitra. The remaining stayed back at Siddhāśrama. Śakaṭī-śata-mātram indicates that the hundred carts carried the ingredients needed to conduct the agnihotra sacrifices.
