Chapter 38: The History of Sagara
Text 1.38.17
सुमतिस्तु नरव्याघ्र गर्भतुम्बं व्यजायत।
षष्टिः पुत्राः सहस्राणि तुम्बभेदाद्विनिसृताः॥
sumatis tu nara-vyāghra garbha-tumbaṁ vyajāyata
ṣaṣṭiḥ putrāḥ sahasrāṇi tumba-bhedād vinisṛtāḥ
sumatiḥ tu = Sumati; nara-vyāghra = O tiger among men; garbha-tumbam = a spherical embryonic flesh; vyajāyata = gave birth to; ṣaṣṭiḥ putrāḥ sahasrāṇi = sixty thousand male offsprings; tumba-bhedāt vinisṛtāḥ = that divided itself into.
O tiger among men, Sumati gave birth to a spherical embryonic flesh. That divided itself into 60,000 male offsprings.
The spherical embryonic flesh divided itself into 60,000 male offsprings, unlike the flesh born out of Gāndhārī that was divided by others into many pieces.
