Chapter 39: Sagara’s Sons Search for the Sacrificial Horse
Text 1.39.10
यज्नच्छिद्रं भवत्येतत्सर्वेषामशिवाय नः।
तत्तथा क्रियतां राजन्यथाच्छिद्रः क्रतुर्भवेत्॥
yajna-cchidraṁ bhavaty etat sarveṣām aśivāya naḥ
tat tathā kriyatāṁ rājan yathācchidraḥ kratur bhavet
yajna-chidram = offense in the sacrificial performance; bhavati = will lead; etat = this; sarveṣām = for all; aśivāya = to inauspiciousness; naḥ = of us; tat = therefore; tathā kriyatām = please do; rājan = O king; yathā acchidraḥ kratuḥ bhavet = whatever will free this sacrifice from defects.
This offense in the sacrificial performance will lead to inauspiciousness for all of us. Therefore, O king, please do whatever will free this sacrifice from defects.
[3] chidraṁ randhrāparādhayoḥ. (Vaijayantī)
Yajña-cchidram here indicates that an offense had been committed while performing the sacrifice. Chidram, literally meaning “defect,” refers to an “offense” here.[3]
