Chapter 42: Bhagīratha’s Austerities for Gaṅgā’s Descent

तस्मिन्राज्यं समावेश्य दिलीपे रघुनन्दन।
हिमवच्छिखरे पुण्ये तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम्॥
tasmin rājyaṁ samāveśya dilīpe raghu-nandana
himavac-chikhare puṇye tapas tepe sudāruṇam
tasmin rājyam samāveśya = after entrusting his kingdom; dilīpe = over to Dilīpa; raghu-nandana = O beloved child of Raghu; himavat-śikhare puṇye = at a pious mountain peak in the Himalayas; tapaḥ tepe sudāruṇam = he executed very terrible austerities [to bring about Gaṅgā’s descent to earth].
O beloved child of Raghu, after entrusting his kingdom over to Dilīpa, he executed very terrible austerities at a pious mountain peak in the Himalayas to bring about Gaṅgā’s descent to earth.
