Chapter 45: The Churning of the Milk Ocean
Text 1.45.20
उत्पपाताग्निसङ्काशं हालाहलमहाविषम्।
तेन दग्धं जगत्सर्वं सदेवासुरमानुषम्॥
utpapātāgni-saṅkāśaṁ hālāhala-mahā-viṣam
tena dagdhaṁ jagat sarvaṁ sadevāsura-mānuṣam
utpapāta = [from the depths of the ocean] surfaced; agni-saṅkāśam = that was as fierce as fire; hālāhala-mahā-viṣam = a great poison called hālāhala; tena = by it; dagdham = were about to be burnt; jagat sarvam = the entire world; sa-deva asura-mānuṣam = including the devas, asuras and human beings.
[From the depths of the ocean] surfaced a great poison called hālāhala that was as fierce as fire. The entire world including the devas, asuras and human beings were about to be burnt by it.1
1. This poison did not emanate from Vāsuki. SB 8.7.18 explicitly notes that the poison came from the ocean.
