Chapter 45: The Churning of the Milk Ocean
Text 1.45.23
दैवतैर्मथ्यमाने तु यत्पूर्वं समुपस्थितम्।
तत्त्वदीयं सुरश्रेष्ठ सुराणामग्रजोऽसि यत्॥
daivatair mathyamāne tu yat pūrvaṁ samupasthitam
tat tvadīyaṁ sura-śreṣṭha surāṇām agrajo ’si yat
daivataiḥ mathyamāne tu = when the devas churned the ocean; yat pūrvam samupasthitam = the first item that has surfaced; tat tvadīyam = is yours; sura-śreṣṭha = O best of devas; surāṇām = the devas; agrajaḥ = taken birth before; asi = you have; yat = for.
When the devas churned the ocean, the first item that has surfaced is yours, O best of devas, for you have taken birth before the devas.1
