Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 45: The Churning of the Milk Ocean
Text 1.45.35

न ताः स्म प्रतिगृह्णन्ति सर्वे ते देवदानवाः।
अप्रतिग्रहणादेव तेन साधारणाः स्मृताः॥

na tāḥ sma pratigṛhṇanti sarve te deva-dānavāḥ
apratigrahaṇād
eva tena sādhāraṇāḥ smṛtāḥ

na tāḥ sma pratigṛhṇanti = none accepted any of them [as his exclusive property]; sarve te deva-dānavāḥ = none of the devas or dānavas accepted; apratigrahaṇāt eva = because nobody them in this manner; tena sādhāraṇāḥ smṛtāḥ = they are considered to be common to all.

None of the devas or dānavas accepted any of them [as his exclusive property]. Because nobody accepted them in this manner, they are considered to be common to all.

Why did the devas or dānavas not accept any of the apsarās? Because none of the apsarās wondered, “Who among these is my Lord?” Therefore, they were considered common to all.
