Chapter 45: The Churning of the Milk Ocean
Text 1.45.36
वरुणस्य ततः कन्या वारुणी रघुनन्दन।
उत्पपात महाभागा मार्गमाणा परिग्रहम्॥
varuṇasya tataḥ kanyā vāruṇī raghu-nandana
utpapāta mahā-bhāgā mārgamāṇā parigraham
varuṇasya = Varuṇa’s; tataḥ = then; kanyā = daughter; vāruṇī = Vāruṇī; raghu-nandana = O beloved descendant of Raghu; utpapāta = arose; mahā-bhāgā = she was greatly opulent; mārgamāṇā parigraham = and she searched for someone who would accept her.
O beloved descendant of Raghu, then Varuṇa’s daughter Vāruṇī arose. She was greatly opulent and she searched for someone who would accept her.
Varuṇa is the presiding deity of the ocean. Vāruṇī is the presiding deity of liquor (surā).
