Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 48: Gautama Curses Ahalyā
Text 1.48.29
मम रूपं समास्थाय कृतवानसि दुर्मते।
अकर्तव्यमिदं तस्माद्विफलस्त्वं भविष्यसि॥
mama rūpaṁ samāsthāya kṛtavān asi durmate
akartavyam idaṁ tasmād viphalas tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi
mama = my; rūpam = form; samāsthāya = assuming; kṛtavān asi = you have done; durmate = O foolish one; akartavyam = prohibited activity; idam = this; tasmāt = therefore; viphalaḥ = incapable of [sexual] enjoyment; tvam = you; bhaviṣyasi = will become.
O foolish one, assuming my form, you have done this prohibited activity. Therefore, you will become incapable of [sexual] enjoyment.
[2] lābha-niṣpatti-bhogeṣu bīje phāle dhane phalam.
Indra’s union with the sage’s wife was so evil and unspeakable that the sage merely referred to it as “this prohibited activity.” Viphalaḥ indicates that Indra would become incapable of [sexual] enjoyment, that is, he would become devoid of his testicles. [Viphala indicates that Indra would be “without phala” and] phala can mean “enjoyment,” according to Nighaṇṭu.[2]
