Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 48: Gautama Curses Ahalyā
Text 1.48.6

किमर्थं च नरश्रेष्ठौ सम्प्राप्तौ दुर्गमे पथि।
वरायुधधरौ वीरौ श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः॥

kimarthaṁ ca nara-śreṣṭhau samprāptau durgame pathi
varāyudhadharau
vīrau śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ

kimartham ca = why; nara-śreṣṭhau = did these princes; samprāptau durgame pathi = come on this difficult path; vara-āyudhadharau = They hold excellent weapons; vīrau = and are heroic; śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ = I want to know in detail.

Why did these princes come on this difficult path? They hold excellent weapons and are heroic. I want to know in detail.

Vīrau here indicates that They were endowed with heroism. King Sumati was aware in general that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa were royal princes come here to ward of any possible obstacles, but he wanted to know specifically why They had arrived here.
