Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 55: King Viśvāmitra Obtains Divine Weapons
Text 1.55.9

समुद्र इव निर्वेगो भग्नदंष्ट्र इवोरगः।
उपरक्त इवादित्यः सद्यो निष्प्रभतां गतः॥

samudra iva nirvego bhagna-daṁṣṭra ivoragaḥ
uparakta
ivādityaḥ sadyo niṣprabhatāṁ gataḥ

samudraḥ iva = like an ocean; nirvegaḥ = without tide; bhagna-daṁṣṭraḥ iva = without its fangs; uragaḥ = a snake; uparaktaḥ iva = during an eclipse; ādityaḥ = or the sun; sadyaḥ = instantly; niṣprabhatām gataḥ = he lost his effulgence.

Like an ocean without tide, a snake without its fangs or the sun during an eclipse, he instantly lost his effulgence.

Viśvāmitra is compared to an ocean without tide because he did not engage in warfare. He is compared to a snake without its fangs for he was powerless. The sun during an eclipse refers to the sun overcome by Rāhu.
