Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.13
स्वकर्मनिरता नित्यं ब्राह्मणा विजितेन्द्रियाः।
दानाध्ययनशीलाश्च संयताश्च प्रतिग्रहे॥
sva-karma-niratā nityaṁ brāhmaṇā vijitendriyāḥ
dānādhyayana-śīlāś ca saṁyatāś ca pratigrahe
sva-karma-niratāḥ = busy in their specific duties; nityam = always; brāhmaṇāḥ = the brāhmaṇas; vijita-indriyāḥ = had their senses fully under control; dāna-adhyayana-śīlāḥ ca = they were habituated to giving charity of knowledge and to reciting mantras; saṁyatāḥ ca = were constrained; pratigrahe = in receiving charity.
Always busy in their specific duties, the brāhmaṇas had their senses fully under control. They were habituated to giving charity of knowledge and to reciting mantras. They were constrained in receiving charity.
