Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.26
सा योजने च द्वे भूयः सत्यनामा प्रकाशते।
यस्यां दशरथो राजा वसञ्जगदपालयत्॥
sā yojane ca dve bhūyaḥ satya-nāmā prakāśate
yasyāṁ daśaratho rājā vasañ jagad apālayat
sā ca = moreover that city; yojane = yojanas; dve = to even two; bhūyaḥ = around it; satya-nāmā = true to its name; prakāśate = was; yasyām = that city; daśarathaḥ = Daśaratha; rājā = for king; vasan = lived and; jagat = the earth; apālayat = ruled.
Moreover, that city was true to its name to even two yojanas around it, for King Daśaratha lived there and ruled the earth.
The author had noted earlier that the city was filled with Atirathas and Mahārathas indicating the prosperity of the chariots in his four-fold army. With such an army, he did not merely make his city unassailable—he made even two yojanas surrounding it impenetrable. Thus the city was truly named Ayodhyā, “the unassailable city.” Authorities also state that it was three yojanas wide and unassailable to up to two yojanas within it.
