Chapter 6: The Residents of Ayodhyā
Text 1.6.8
कामी वा न कदर्यो वा नृशंसः पुरुषः क्वचित्।
द्रष्टुं शक्यमयोध्यायां नाविद्वान्न च नास्तिकः॥
kāmī vā na kadaryo vā nṛśaṁsaḥ puruṣaḥ kvacit
draṣṭuṁ śakyam ayodhyāyāṁ nāvidvān na ca nāstikaḥ
kāmī = who was exclusively devoted to kāma; vā na = it was neither; kadaryaḥ = greedy; vā = or; nṛśaṁsaḥ = cruel [4]; puruṣaḥ = a man; kvacit = anywhere; draṣṭum = to see; śakyam = possible; ayodhyāyām = in Ayodhyā; avidvān = uneducated; na ca = nor; nāstikaḥ = was it possible to find one who didn’t believe in an afterlife.
It was neither possible to find a man anywhere in Ayodhyā who was exclusively devoted to kāma, or greedy or cruel or uneducated nor was it possible to find one who didn’t believe in an afterlife.
Such a man was not to be seen in any part of Ayodhyā. Kadaryaḥ (“a greedy person”) refers to one who tortures himself, the duties of Vedic dharma, his sons, wife, parents and brothers out of greed [5].
