Chapter 62: Śunaḥśepa Saved
Text 1.62.25
स बद्धो वाग्भिरग्र्याभिरभितुष्टाव वै सुरौ।
इन्द्रमिन्द्रानुजं चैव यथावन्मुनिपुत्रकः॥
sa baddho vāgbhir agryābhir abhituṣṭāva vai surau
indram indrānujaṁ caiva yathāvan muni-putrakaḥ
saḥ = the; baddhaḥ = tied to pillar; vāgbhiḥ agryābhiḥ = by means of the excellent mantras; abhituṣṭāva vai = glorified; surau = the two deities; indram = Indra; indrānujam ca eva = and Upendra; yathāvat = as he had been taught [by Viśvāmitra]; muni-putrakaḥ= the sage’s son.
Tied to the pillar, the sage’s son glorified the two deities—Indra and Upendra—by means of the excellent mantras, as he had been taught [by Viśvāmitra].
Indra was meant to be the enjoyer of the animal to be sacrificed and Upendra was the deity of the sacrificial pillar. Considering Upendra to be his mediator, he glorified Indra as the giver of the results [he sought].
