Chapter 70: Rāma’s Noble Lineage
Text 1.70.2-3

भ्राता मम महातेजा यवीयानतिधार्मिकः।
कुशध्वज इति ख्यातः पुरीमध्यवसच्छुभाम्॥

वार्याफलकपर्यन्तां पिबन्निक्षुमतीं नदीम्।
साङ्काश्यां पुण्यसङ्काशां विमानमिव पुष्पकम्॥

bhrātā mama mahā-tejā yavīyān atidhārmikaḥ
kuśadhvaja
iti khyātaḥ purīm adhyavasac chubhām

vāryā-phalaka-paryantāṁ pibann ikṣumatīṁ nadīm
sāṅkāśyāṁ
puṇya-saṅkāśāṁ vimānam iva puṣpakam

bhrātā = brother; mama = my; mahā-tejāḥ = has great prowess; yavīyān = younger; atidhārmikaḥ = and is extremely dhārmika; kuśadhvajaḥ = Kuśadhvaja; iti = as; khyātaḥ = famous; purīm = over the city; adhyavasat = he presides; śubhām = auspicious; vāryā-phalaka-paryantām = in whose boundary are placed tridents; piban = drinking the water; ikṣumatīm = Ikṣumatī; nadīm = of the surrounding river; sāṅkāśyām = Sāṅkāśyā; puṇya-saṅkāśām = that is as good as piety itself; vimānam = airplane; iva = the city itself resembles; puṣpakam = the Puṣpaka.

My younger brother famous as Kuśadhvaja has great prowess and is extremely dhārmika. He presides over the auspicious city Sāṅkāśyā that is as good as piety itself, drinking the water of the surrounding river Ikṣumatī in whose boundary are placed tridents. The city itself resembles the Puṣpaka airplane.

Though Śatānanda is well aware of the details of Kuśadhvaja’s city, Janaka wanted that this information reach, through word of mouth, Daśaratha and others [from his party]. Therefore, he describes Sāṅkāśyā. Ikṣumatī served as a moat to protect the fortress-city Sāṅkāśyā.

In some manuscripts, vāryāmalaka-paryantām appears instead of vāryā-phalaka-paryantām indicating that the boundary of the city had vāryāmalaka, a kind of āmalaka fruit.

Puṇya-saṅkāśām indicates that the residents of Sāṅkāśyā are pious and that that city naturally fulfilled their desires.
