Chapter 73: The Grand Wedding of Sītā and Rāma
Text 1.73.8

tatas tām uṣito rātriṁ saha putrair mahātmabhiḥ
prabhāte
punar utthāya kṛtvā karmāṇi karmavit
ṛṣīṁs
tadā puraskṛtya yajna-vāṭam upāgamat

tataḥ = then; tām = that; uṣitaḥ = he passed; rātrim = night; saha putraiḥ = with his sons; mahā-ātmabhiḥ = [the four] great souls; prabhāte = early in the morning; punaḥ utthāya = waking up again; kṛtvā = performed; karmāṇi = his duties; karmavit = that knower of religious activities; ṛṣīn = the sages; tadā = then; puraskṛtya = keeping in front of him; yajna-vāṭam = the sacrificial arena; upāgamat = he reached.

He then passed that night with his sons, [the four] great souls. Waking up again early in the morning, that knower of religious activities performed his duties. Then, keeping the sages in front of him, he reached the sacrificial arena.

“The sacrificial arena” here refers to the place of festivity. Because it was already noted in text 13 that the wedding ceremony was to take place after the completion of the sacrifice that had been going on, it is understood that that sacrifice had been concluded [before this wedding]. In the next chapter, it will be described that [after the wedding was over], Daśaratha left Mithilā. [Therefore, he did not go to the place where the previously mentioned sacrifice had been conducted; he went to the wedding arena.]
