rāmasya vacanaṁ śrutvā rājā daśarathaḥ sutam
bāhubhyāṁ sampariṣvajya mūrdhni cāghrāya rāghavam
gato rāma iti śrutvā hṛṣṭaḥ pramudito nṛpaḥ
punar jātaṁ tadā mene putram ātmānam eva ca
rāmasya = of Rāma; vacanam = the words; śrutvā = hearing; rājā daśarathaḥ = King Daśaratha; sutam = His son; bahubhyām = with his arms; sampariṣvajya = embraced and; mūrdhni ca aghrāya = smelt His head; rāghavam = Rāghava; gataḥ rāma iti śrutvā = [simply] by hearing that Paraśurāma had gone; hṛṣṭaḥ pramuditaḥ nṛpaḥ = the king’s hair stood on end and he became delighted; punaḥ jātam = had taken birth again; tadā mene = he thought that; putram ātmānam eva ca = his son and he himself.
Hearing the words of Rāma, King Daśaratha embraced His son Rāghava with his arms and smelt His head. [Simply] by hearing that Paraśurāma had gone, the king’s hair stood on end and he became delighted. He thought that his son and he himself had taken birth again.
Because Daśaratha was disturbed, he did not distinctly hear the words spoken by Rāma. [He then embraced Rāma and smelt His head.] Then, he clearly heard that Paraśurāma had gone [and became delighted].
