Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 4: Rāma Buries Virādha

When Virādha carried off Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, Sītā-devī cried loudly. The two descendants of Raghu cut off the two arms of Virādha. Despite being variously tormented by the weapons of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, Virādha didn’t die. Rāma then told Lakṣmaṇa that Virādha cannot be killed by weapons and that he should be buried in a pit. By the glorious touch of Lord Rāma’s lotus feet, Virādha remembered that he was a gandharva in his previous life who had now taken birth as a rākṣasa upon being cursed by Kuvera. He informed Rāma of this and requested Him to go to Śarabhaṅga’s āśrama. He then requested Rāma that he be buried in a pit and Rāma did so. Śrī Rāmacandra then lived happily in the forest with Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa.
