Chapter 4: Daśaratha’s Anxiety About Coronating Rāma
Text 2.4.30
तत्र तां प्रवणामेव मातरं क्षौमवासिनीम्।
वाग्यतां देवतागारे ददर्शायाचतीं श्रियम्॥
tatra tāṁ pravaṇām eva mātaraṁ kṣauma-vāsinīm
vāg-yatāṁ devatāgāre dadarśāyācatīṁ śriyam
tatra = there; tām pravaṇām eva = with controlled mind; mātaram = His mother; kṣauma-vāsinīm = dressed in silk; vāk-yatām = and speech; devatā-āgāre = in the Deity room; dadarśa = He saw; āyācatīm = praying for; śriyam = His prosperity;
He saw His mother there, dressed in silk, with controlled mind and speech, in the Deity room, praying for His prosperity.
Kausalyā’s mind was controlled, that is, extraordinarily attached to her Deity. She was dressed in silk as appropriate for the performance of a vow. Her speech was controlled, that is, she was silent.
