Chapter 4: Daśaratha’s Anxiety About Coronating Rāma
Text 2.4.44
सौमित्रे भुङ्क्ष्व भोगांस्त्वमिष्टान्राज्यफलानि च।
जीवितं च हि राज्यं च त्वदर्थमभिकामये॥
saumitre bhuṅkṣva bhogāṁs tvam iṣṭān rājya-phalāni ca
jīvitaṁ ca hi rājyaṁ ca tvad-artham abhikāmaye
saumitre = O son of Sumitrā-devī; bhuṅkṣva = enjoy; bhogān = objects of enjoyment; tvam1 iṣṭān = these cherished; rājya-phalāni = the results of kingship; ca = and; jīvitam ca hi = My life; rājyam = the kingdom; ca = and; tvat-artham = for Your sake; abhikāmaye = I desire.
1. Technical note: tvam bhuṅkṣva.
O son of Sumitrā-devī, enjoy these cherished objects of enjoyment and the results of kingship. I desire My life and the kingdom for Your sake!
Lord Rāma wanted Lakṣmaṇa to enjoy the results of kingship, that is, invaluable jewels, clothes, ornaments and so on.
