Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.10
एवमुक्ता तया देव्या मन्थरा पापदर्शिनी।
रामार्थमुपहिंसन्ती कुब्जा वचनमब्रवीत्॥
evam uktā tayā devyā mantharā pāpa-darśinī
rāmārtham upahiṁsantī kubjā vacanam abravīt
evam = thus; uktā = being addressed; tayā = by the; devyā = queen; mantharā = Mantharā; pāpa-darśinī = of sinful vision; rāma-artham = [Daśaratha’s] mission of coronating Rāma; upahiṁsantī = while destroying; kubjā = the hunchbacked; vacanam = the following words; abravīt = spoke.
Being thus addressed by the queen, the hunchbacked Mantharā of sinful vision spoke the following words while destroying [Daśaratha’s] mission of coronating Rāma.
In order to remind Kaikeyī of the boons [granted by Daśaratha], Mantharā speaks the following verses.
