Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.13

स शम्बर इति ख्यातः शतमायो महासुरः।
ददौ शक्रस्य सङ्ग्रामं देवसङ्घैरनिर्जितः॥

sa śambara iti khyātaḥ śata-māyo mahāsuraḥ
dadau śakrasya saṅgrāmaṁ deva-saṅghair anirjitaḥ

saḥ = that; śambaraḥ = Śambara; iti = as; khyātaḥ = was famous; śata-māyaḥ = using hundreds of deceptive tricks; mahā-asuraḥ = great asura; dadau = he engaged; śakrasya = with Indra; saṅgrāmam = in war; deva-saṅghaiḥ = the devas; anirjitaḥ = after defeating.

That great asura was famous as Śambara. Using hundreds of deceptive tricks, he engaged in war with Indra after defeating the devas.1
