Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.53
इति प्रशस्यमानाः सा कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत्।
शयानां शयने शुभ्रे वेद्यामग्निशिखामिव॥
iti praśasyamānā sā kaikeyīm idam abravīt
śayānāṁ śayane śubhre vedyām agni-śikhām iva
iti = in this way; praśasyamānā = while being praised; sā = Mantharā; kaikeyīm = to Kaikeyī; idam = the following; abravīt = spoke; śayānām = who was lying; śayane = bed; śubhre = on a white; vedyām = on a sacrificial platform; agni-śikhām = the flames of fire; iva = like.
While being praised in this way, Mantharā spoke the following to Kaikeyī who was lying on a white bed like the flames of fire on a sacrificial platform.1
1 This signifies that Kaikeyī was burning with her ambitions.
