Chapter 9: Kaikeyī Convinced by Mantharā
Text 2.9.60
अथो पुनस्तां महिषीं महीक्षितो वचोभिरत्यर्थमहापराक्रमैः।
उवाच कुब्जा भरतस्य मातरं हितं वचो राममुपेत्य चाहितम्॥
atho punas tāṁ mahiṣīṁ mahīkṣito
vacobhir atyartha-mahā-parākramaiḥ
uvāca kubjā bharatasya mātaraṁ
hitaṁ vaco rāmam upetya cāhitam
atho = then; punaḥ = again; tām = to the; mahiṣīm = queen; mahīkṣitaḥ = of the ruler; vacobhiḥ = words; atyartha-mahā-parākramaiḥ = of extremely great impact; uvāca = spoke; kubjā = the hunchback; bharatasya = Bharata’s; mātaram = to mother; hitam = were to do good; vacaḥ = these words; rāmam upetya = to Rāma; ca = and; ahitam = bad.
Then the hunchback again spoke to the queen of the ruler words of extremely great impact. These words were to do good to Bharata’s mother and bad to Rāma.
Thus Kaikeyī’s conviction became firm.
