Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 10: Daśaratha Meets Kaikeyī
Text 2.10.9
आज्ञाप्य तु महाराजो राघवस्याभिषेचनम्।
उपस्थानमनुज्ञाप्य प्रविवेश निवेशनम्॥
ājñāpya ca mahā-rājo rāghavasyābhiṣecanam
upasthānam anujñāpya praviveśa niveśanam
ājñāpya ca = having directed Sumantra and others to prepare for; mahā-rājaḥ = Mahārāja Daśaratha; rāghavasya = Rāghava’s; abhiṣecanam = coronation; upasthānam = of his assembly; anujñāpya = took leave and; praviveśa = entered; niveśanam = his residence.
Having directed Sumantra and others to prepare for Rāghava’s coronation, Mahārāja Daśaratha took leave of his assembly and entered his residence.
Upasthānam can also indicate that Daśaratha took permission from his spiritual master Vasiṣṭha [before going to his residence], since text 2.5.25 states:
guruṇā tv abhyanujñāto manujaughaṁ visṛjya tam
viveśāntaḥ-puraṁ rājā siṁho giri-guhām iva
“Being permitted by his spiritual master, the king left the crowd of men and entered his inner quarter like a lion enters the cave of a mountain.”
