Chapter 11: Kaikeyī Demands two Boons
Text 2.11.1
तं मन्मथशरैर्विद्धं कामवेगवशानुगम्।
उवाच पृथिवीपालं कैकेयी दारुणं वचः॥
taṁ manmatha-śarair viddhaṁ kāma-vega-vaśānugam
uvāca pṛthivī-pālaṁ kaikeyī dāruṇaṁ vacaḥ
tam = to the; manmatha-śaraiḥ = by the arrows of Cupid; viddham = who was pierced; kāma-vega-vaśa-anugam = and who was under the control of the urge of lust; uvāca = then spoke; pṛthivī-pālam = king; kaikeyī = Kaikeyī; dāruṇam = the following harsh; vacaḥ = words.
Kaikeyī then spoke the following harsh words to the king who was pierced by the arrows of Cupid and who was under the control of the urge of lust.
This chapter describes how Kaikeyī carried out Mantharā’s instruction:
yadā tu te varaṁ dadyāt svayam utthāpya rāghavaḥ
vyavasthāpya mahā-rājaṁ tvam imaṁ vṛṇuyā varam
“When the descendant of Raghu personally makes you sit up and grants you the boons, make the Mahārāja promise you that he will and then ask him these two boons.” (Rāmāyaṇa 2.9.29)
