इति दुःखाभिसन्तप्तं विलपन्तमचेतनम्।
घूर्णमानं महाराजं शोकेन समभिप्लुतम्॥
पारं शोकार्णवस्याशु प्रार्थयन्तं पुनः पुनः।
प्रत्युवाचाथ कैकेयी रौद्रा रौद्रतरं वचः॥

ghūrṇamānaṁ mahā-rājaṁ śokena samabhiplutam
pāraṁ śokārṇavasyāśu prārthayantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ
pratyuvācātha kaikeyī raudrā raudrataraṁ vacaḥ
iti = thus; duḥkha-abhisantaptam = tormented by distress; vilapantam = lamented; acetanam = senselessly; ghūrṇamānam = while rolling here and there on the ground; mahā-rājam = Mahārāja Daśaratha; śokena = by sorrow; samabhiplutam = he was entirely overcome; pāram = cross over; śoka-arṇavasya = this ocean of sorrow; āśu = to quickly [help him]; prārthayantam = he beseeched her; punaḥ punaḥ = repeatedly; pratyuvāca = replied to him; atha = that completely [refuted his statements] 2; kaikeyī = Kaikeyī; raudrā = with a terrible appearance; raudrataram = in even more terrible; vacaḥ = words.
Thus tormented by distress, Mahārāja Daśaratha lamented senselessly while rolling here and there on the ground. He was entirely overcome by sorrow. He repeatedly beseeched her to quickly [help him] cross over this ocean of sorrow. With a terrible appearance, Kaikeyī replied to him in even more terrible words that completely [refuted his statements].
Daśaratha was overcome by sorrow by thinking of his separation from Rāma in the future. Daśaratha wanted Kaikeyī to put an end to the ocean of lamentation [he was drowning in by permitting] Rāma’s coronation. [Nevertheless,] she told him everything she wanted to tell him about stopping Rāma’s coronation.
