Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.63
कथं द्रक्ष्यामि रामस्य वनं गच्छेति भाषिते।
मुखवर्णं विवर्णं तं यथैवेन्दुमुपप्लुतम्॥
kathaṁ drakṣyāmi rāmasya vanaṁ gaccheti bhāṣite
mukha-varṇaṁ vivarṇaṁ taṁ yathaivendum upaplutam
katham = how; drakṣyāmi = can I see; rāmasya = Rāma’s; vanam = to the forest; gaccha iti = go; bhāṣite = when I tell Him; mukha-varṇam vivarṇam = face becoming discolored; tam = the; yathā eva = like; indum = moon; upaplutam = becoming eclipsed.
How can I see Rāma’s face becoming discolored like the moon becoming eclipsed when I tell Him, “Go to the forest!”?
GLOSS. [The glossator has the following reading of this verse:]
kathaṁ vakṣyasi rāmasya vanaṁ gaccheti bhāṣite
mukhe varṇaṁ vivarṇaṁ tu yathaivendum upaplutam
“[Even] when I tell Him to go to the forest, how will you tell Him [the same since He is extremely dear to you]? [How can I see His] moonlike face become discolored?”
