Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.67
कैकेय्या क्लिश्यमानेन पुत्रः प्रव्राजितो मया।
यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्येतत्तदसत्यं भविष्यति॥
kaikeyyā kliśyamānena putraḥ pravrājito mayā
yadi satyaṁ bravīmy etat tad asatyaṁ bhaviṣyati
kaikeyyā = because of Kaikeyī; kliśyamānena = in distress; putraḥ = my son; pravrājitaḥ = banished; mayā = I; yadi = if; satyam = truth; bravīmi = I tell them; etat = the; tat = that statement of mine that I will coronate Rāma [as my heir apparent]; asatyam = false; bhaviṣyati = will become.
If I tell them the truth that I banished my son in distress because of Kaikeyī, then that statement of mine that I will coronate Rāma [as my heir apparent] will become false.
If Daśaratha told them the truth that he was persecuted into banishing his son because Kaikeyī had demanded that he fulfill the two boons that he had granted her earlier by coronating Bharata and banishing Rāma, then his statement that he would coronate Rāma will invariably become untrue.
