स भूमिपालो विलपन्ननाथवत्स्रिया गृहीतो हृदयेऽतिमात्रया।
पपात देव्याश्चरणौ प्रसारितावुभावसंस्पृश्य यथातुरस्तथा॥
sa bhūmipālo vilapann anāthavat
striyā gṛhīto hṛdaye ’timātrayā
papāta devyāś caraṇau prasāritāv
ubhāv asaṁspṛśya yathāturas tathā
saḥ = that; bhūmipālaḥ = ruler of the earth; vilapan = lamenting; anāthavat = like an orphan; striyā = by that woman; gṛhītaḥ = captivated; hṛdaye = his heart; atimātrayā = who had exceeded her limits; papāta = fell; devyāḥ = of his queen; caraṇau = at the feet; prasāritau ubhau = that were spread out; asaṁspṛśya = before touching them; yathā = like; āturaḥ tathā = a person tormented by a disease.
Lamenting like an orphan, his heart captivated by that woman who had exceeded her limits, that ruler of the earth, like a person tormented by a disease, fell at the feet of his queen that were spread out before touching them.

“Captivated by that woman in his heart” indicates that Daśaratha’s heart was under Kaikeyī’s control. Though he was the ruler of earth, he was incapable of restraining her. He lamented like an orphan by speaking incoherently statements such as “I cannot tolerate you being alive” (text 113) and “I can even touch your feet” (text 114). Kaikeyī’s legs were spread out indicating her lack of regard and respect for her husband. Asaṁspṛśya indicates that he fainted before he touched her feet.
