विशुद्धभावस्य हि दुष्टभावा ताम्रेक्षणस्याश्रुकलस्य राज्ञः।
श्रुत्वा विचित्रं करुणं विलापं भर्तुर्नृशंसा न चकार वाक्यम्॥
viśuddha-bhāvasya hi duṣṭa-bhāvā
tāmrekṣaṇasyāśru-kalasya rājñaḥ
śrutvā vicitraṁ karuṇaṁ vilāpaṁ
bhartur nṛśaṁsā na cakāra vākyam
viśuddha-bhāvasya hi = intentions were pure; duṣṭa-bhāvā = of evil intent; tāmra-īkṣaṇasya = his eyes were copper-red; aśru-kalasya = and filled with tears; rājñaḥ = the king’s; śrutvā = despite hearing; vicitram = the variegated; karuṇam = and piteous; vilāpam = lamentation; bhartuḥ = of her husband; nṛśaṁsā = the cruel woman; na = not; cakāra vākyam = did speak a single word.
The king’s intentions were pure. His eyes were copper-red and filled with tears. Despite hearing the variegated and piteous
lamentation of her husband, the cruel woman of evil intent did not speak a single word.
Daśaratha’s eyes were copper-red because of excessive sorrow. His lamentation was variegated because it was accompanied by his appeasement and criticism of her.
