Chapter 14: Daśaratha Grants Kaikeyī her two Boons
Text 2.14.1
पुत्रशोकार्दितं पापा विसंज्ञं पतितं भुवि।
विवेष्टमानमुद्वीक्ष्य सैक्ष्वाकमिदमब्रवीत्॥
putra-śokārditaṁ pāpā visaṁjñaṁ patitaṁ bhuvi
viceṣṭamānam udvīkṣya saikṣvākam idam abravīt
putra-śoka-arditam = was sorrowfully lamenting about his son; pāpā = sinful woman; visaṁjñam = and bereft of sense; patitam = lying; bhuvi = on the ground; viceṣṭamānam = motionless; udvīkṣya = noticing; sā = that; aikṣvākam = that the descendant of Ikṣvāku; idam = as follows; abravīt = spoke.
Noticing that the descendant of Ikṣvāku was sorrowfully lamenting about his son, lying on the ground motionless and bereft of sense, the sinful woman spoke as follows.
In this chapter, Daśaratha concludes that Rāma had to be banished.
GLOSS. The sage Vālmīki notes in this verse that Kaikeyī thought, “If the king were to die because of me, let him die—he is an old man [after all], but he should not give up the work he began.
