Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 14: Daśaratha Grants Kaikeyī her two Boons
Text 2.14.2

पापं कृत्वैव किमिदं मम संश्रुत्य संश्रवम्।
शेषे क्षितितले सन्नः स्थित्यां स्थातुं त्वमर्हसि॥

pāpaṁ kṛtvaiva kim idaṁ mama saṁśrutya saṁśravam
śeṣe kṣiti-tale sannaḥ sthityāṁ sthātuṁ tvam arhasi

pāpam kṛtvā eva = and then you committed the sin of breaking that promise; kim = why; idam = now; mama = me; saṁśrutya saṁśravam = you promised that you will grant [me the two boons]; śeṣe = are you lying; kṣiti-tale = on the floor; sannaḥ = in dejection; sthityām = on the platform of good behavior 1; sthātum = be situated; tvam = you; arhasi = should.

You promised me that you will grant [me the two boons], and then you committed the sin of breaking that promise. Now why are you lying on the floor in dejection? You should be situated on the platform of proper behavior.

The “proper behavior” that she was referring to was the practice of keeping one’s word.

According to Kaikeyī, it was proper [for Daśaratha to keep his word] because of the reason she set out in the next verse.
