लक्षयित्वा ह्यभिप्रायं प्रियकामा सुदक्षिणा।
सञ्चोदयति राजानं मदर्थं मदिरेक्षणे॥
lakṣayitvā hy abhiprāyaṁ priyā-kāmā sudakṣiṇā
sañcodayati rājānaṁ mad-arthaṁ madirekṣaṇe
lakṣayitvā hi = having discerned; abhiprāyam = the king’s intention; priyā-kāmā = desiring My pleasure; sudakṣiṇā = the very expert queen; sañcodayati = is impelling; rājānam = the king; mat-artham = for My sake; madirā-īkṣaṇe = O lady with intoxicated eyes.
O lady with intoxicated eyes, having discerned the king’s intention, desiring My pleasure, the very expert queen is impelling the king for My sake.
1 This is a lesson for us who are often betrayed by those whom we implicitly trust. Just Rāma did not develop any animosity towards Queen Kaikeyī, we should discipline our minds to avoid developing animosity towards those who betray our trust. This is especially relevant for those engaged in sādhana-bhakti with the desire to attain liberation from material existence and perpetual, unmotivated devotional service to the Supreme Lord in His abode.
Lord Rāma inferred this on the basis of Sumantra’s statement that King Dāśaratha and Queen Kaikeyī want to meet Him immediately. Rāmacandra considered as follows, “Queen Kaikeyī is very expert. So, having discerned the king’s intention that the coronation should not be delayed until Bharata’s return because he is old, desiring My pleasure, she is impelling the king to conduct My coronation [right away, without delay, as a reinforcement of his wish]. Such a favor [upon Me by Queen Kaikeyī] is because of your good fortune.”1
In order to dispell any doubts in Sītā-devī’s mind, He then speaks the following verse.
