अहं हि सीतां राज्यं च प्राणानिष्टान्धनानि च।
हृष्टो भ्रात्रे स्वयं दद्यां भरतायाप्रचोदितः॥
ahaṁ hi sītāṁ rājyaṁ ca prāṇān iṣṭān dhanāni ca
hṛṣṭo bhrātre svayaṁ dadyāṁ bharatāyāpracoditaḥ
aham hi = I; sītām = Sītā; rājyam ca = the kingdom; prāṇān = My life; iṣṭān = objects of desire; dhanāni = items of wealth; ca = and; hṛṣṭaḥ = happily; bhrātre = to My brother; svayam dadyām = would have given away; bharatāya = Bharata; apracoditaḥ = and voluntarily.
I would have happily and voluntarily given away Sītā, the kingdom, My life, objects of desire and items of wealth to My brother Bharata.
1 This is allowed for kṣatriyas in Vedic civilization. From the Mahābhārata, we are aware that Bhīṣma had gone to attend the svayamvara of Ambā, Ambālikā and Ambikā and kidnapped them for his brother Vicitravīrya who married the latter two.
Lord Rāma intended to state that [had Daśaratha informed Rāma in the past that Bharata would succeed him on the throne,] Rāma would have, at the time of breaking [Lord Śiva’s] bow, given away Sītā to Bharata.1
