Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.14
तव त्वहं क्षमं मन्ये नोत्सुकस्य विलम्बनम्।
राम तस्मादितः शीघ्रं वनं त्वं गन्तुमर्हसि॥
tava tv ahaṁ kṣamaṁ manye notsukasya vilambanam
rāma tasmād itaḥ śīghraṁ vanaṁ tvaṁ gantum arhasi
tava tu = You are; aham = and I; kṣamam = is appropriate; manye = think; na = don’t; utsukasya = eager to go; vilambanam = that a delay [in Your departure]; rāma = Rāma; tasmāt = so; itaḥ = from here; śīghram = quickly; vanam = to the forest; tvam gantum arhasi = go.
Rāma, You are eager to go and I don’t think that a delay [in Your departure] is appropriate. So, quickly go to the forest from here.
Kaikeyī thought, “If this person delays His departure until Bharata’s arrival, there will be a great adversity because Bharata is devoted to His elder brother.” Therefore she spoke this verse. Utsukasya can also indicate that Kaikeyī thought that Rāma might have been eager to see Bharata’s coronation.
