Chapter 19: Rāma Promises to Leave for the Forest
Text 2.19.17
धिक्कष्टमिति निश्वस्य राजा शोकपरिप्लुतः।
मूर्च्छितो न्यपतत्तस्मिन्पर्यङ्के हेमभूषिते॥
dhik kaṣṭam iti niśvasya rājā śoka-pariplutaḥ
mūrcchito nyapatat tasmin paryaṅke hema-bhūṣite
dhik = “shame upon you”; kaṣṭam = “oh, how difficult it is”; iti = with the words; niśvasya = sighing; rājā = the king; śoka-pariplutaḥ = overwhelmed in distress; mūrcchitaḥ = fainted; nyapatat = and fell; tasmin = on the; paryaṅke = couch; hema-bhūṣite = decorated with gold.
Sighing with the words “Shame upon you! Oh, how difficult it is!” the king, overwhelmed in distress, fainted and fell on the couch decorated with gold.
1 The words dhik kaṣṭam indicate anger and sorrow respectively.
The king sighed with the words “Alas, alas!” upon hearing Kaikeyī’s false statement [in the previous verse].1
