Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 20: Kausalyā’s Lamentation
Text 2.20.52

इदं तु दुःखं यदनर्थकानि मे व्रतानि दानानि च संयमाश्च हि।
तपश्च तप्तं यदपत्यकारणात्सुनिष्फलं बीजमिवोप्तमूषरे॥

idaṁ tu duḥkhaṁ yad anarthakāni me
vratāni dānāni ca saṁyamāś ca hi
tapaś ca taptaṁ yad apatya-kāraṇāt
suniṣphalaṁ bījam ivoptam ūṣare

idam tu = this is nothing but; duḥkham = misery; yat = that; anarthakāni = have turned out to be useless; me = I had carried out; vratāni = the vows; dānāni ca = charities; saṁyamāḥ = meditations; ca hi = and; tapaḥ ca = the austerity; taptam = I had carried out; yat = that; apatya-kāraṇāt = for the sake of my son; suniṣphalam = extremely fruitless; bījam = a seed; iva = like; uptam = was sowing; ūṣare = on barren land.

The vows, charities and meditations that I had carried out for the sake of my son have turned out to be useless. The austerity I had carried out was like sowing a seed on barren land—extremely fruitless. This is nothing but misery.

The distress that will be described now is distinct from the various distresses mentioned so far.
