Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 21: Rāma Consoles Kausalyā and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.21.20

हनिष्ये पितरं वृद्धं कैकेय्यासक्तमानसम्।
कृपणं च स्थितं बाल्ये वृद्धभावेन गर्हितम्॥

haniṣye pitaraṁ vṛddhaṁ kaikeyyāsakta-mānasam
kṛpaṇaṁ ca sthitaṁ bālye vṛddha-bhāvena garhitam

haniṣye = I will kill; pitaram = Our father; vṛddham = a senile; kaikeyī-āsakta-mānasam = whose mind is obsessed with Kaikeyī; kṛpaṇam = wretched man; ca = and; sthitam = who is; bālye = [thus] in his teens; vṛddha-bhāvena = for those who have reached old age; garhitam = this is condemned.

I will kill Our father, a senile wretched man whose mind is obsessed with Kaikeyī and who is [thus] in his teens. This is condemned for those who have reached old age.

GLOSS. Though old, the king is in his teens, that is, in a state of foolishness. Therefore he is condemned.
