Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 21: Rāma Consoles Kausalyā and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.21.22
भ्रातुस्ते वदतः पुत्र लक्ष्मणस्य श्रुतं त्वया।
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं कुरुष्व यदि रोचते॥
bhrātus te vadataḥ putra lakṣmaṇasya śrutaṁ tvayā
yad atrānantaraṁ kāryaṁ kuruṣva yadi rocate
bhrātuḥ = brother; te = Your; vadataḥ = speaking; putra = my son; lakṣmaṇasya = Lakṣmaṇa; śrutam = have heard; tvayā = You; yat = what; atra = in this regard; anantaram = now; kāryam = needs to be done; kuruṣva = do; yadi = if; rocate = You so desire.
My son, You have heard Your brother Lakṣmaṇa speaking. Now do what needs to be done in this regard, if You so desire.
Because Kausalyā was the mother of Rāma, who was supremely devoted to dharma, she abandoned all frivolous thoughts and told Him to do whatever needed to be done if He so desired.
She knew that Rāma, who followed the instructions of His father, would find Lakṣmaṇa’s words intolerable. And so she spoke the next verse.
