नरैरिवोल्काभिरपोह्यमानो महागजोऽध्वानमनुप्रविष्टः।
भूयः प्रजज्वाल विलापमेनं निशम्य रामः करुणं जनन्याः॥

naraiḥ = by men; iva = like; ulkābhiḥ = carrying torches; apohyamānaḥ = despite being prevented; mahā-gajaḥ = a great elephant; adhvānam = a road; anupraviṣṭaḥ = that enters; bhūyaḥ = again; prajajvāla = blazed forth [in His determination to depart]; vilāpam = lament; enam = the; niśamya = upon hearing; rāmaḥ = Rāma; karuṇam = piteous; jananyāḥ = of His mother.
Like a great elephant that enters a road despite being prevented by men carrying torches, Rāma again blazed forth [in His determination to depart] upon hearing the piteous lament of His mother.
The author notes here that Rāma was firmly fixed on dharma [alone] despite His mother’s sorrow. Though His mother and Lakṣmaṇa prevented Him, Rāma entered His pathway of dharma.
In the example here, men is in the plural. This indicates that Sumitrā’s son spoke once again. Therefore, it will be pointed out that Rāma replied to His mother and Sumitrā’s son.
