Chapter 24: Rāma Instructs Kausalyā
Text 2.24.6-8

अयं तु मामात्मभवस्तवादर्शनमारुतः।
विलापदुःखसमिधो रुदिताश्रुहुताहुतिः॥

चिन्ताबाष्पमहाधूमस्तवादर्शनचित्तजः।
कर्शयित्वा भृशं पुत्र निश्वासायाससम्भवः॥

त्वया विहीनामिह मां शोकाग्निरतुलो महान्।
प्रधक्ष्यति यथा कक्षं चित्रभानुर्हिमात्यये॥

ayaṁ tu mām ātma-bhavas tavādarśana-mārutaḥ
vilāpa-duḥkha-samidho ruditāśru-hutāhutiḥ

cintā-bāṣpa-mahā-dhūmas tavādarśana-cittajaḥ
karśayitvā bhṛśaṁ putra niśvāsāyāsa-sambhavaḥ

tvayā vihīnām iha māṁ śokāgnir atulo mahān
pradhakṣyati yathā kakṣaṁ citra-bhānur himātyaye

ayam tu = this fire of grief; mām = me; ātma-bhavaḥ = born from my body; tava = Your; adarśana-mārutaḥ = will be fanned by the wind of absence; vilāpa-duḥkha-samidhaḥ = fueled by the sorrow of my cries of lamentation; rudita-aśru-huta-āhutiḥ = caused to blaze by the offerings of oblations that will be my tears due to crying; cintā-bāṣpa-mahā-dhūmaḥ = and will emanate the great smoke of fever due to anxiety; tava = You; adarśana-cittajaḥ = this fire of grief, born from my mind by not seeing; karśayitvā bhṛśam = will dry up and; putra = My son; niśvāsa-āyāsa-sambhavaḥ = will be caused by my endeavor to breath; tvayā = of You; vihīnām = deprived; iha = now; mām = me; śoka-agniḥ = fire of grief; atulaḥ = an incomparable; mahān = and great; pradhakṣyati = burn into ashes; yathā = like; kakṣam = dry grass; citra-bhānuḥ = a forest fire [that burns]; hima-atyaye = at the end of the cool season.

My son, deprived of You, an incomparable and great fire of grief will now dry me up and burn me into ashes like a forest fire [that burns] dry grass at the end of the cool season. This fire of grief, born from my body, will be fanned by the wind of Your absence, fueled by the sorrow of my cries of lamentation, caused to blaze by the offering of oblations that will be my tears due to crying, and will emanate the great smoke of fever due to anxiety. This fire of grief, born from my mind by not seeing You, will be caused by my endeavor to breath.

Here, Kausalyā’s distress due to separation [from Rāmacandra] is equated to the agony of [being burnt] by fire.

Since Kausalyā’s fire of grief is caused by not seeing [Rāma], it has been described as the wind. The sorrow of her cries of lamentation have been described as the fuel for a fire sacrifice since it increases [her great fire of grief]. In some manuscripts, tavāgamana-citta-jaḥ appears instead of tavādarśana-cittajaḥ [indicating that Kausalyā’s fire of grief will be born from her mind while waiting for Rāma’s return]. Her fire of grief will be due to the human endeavor of her breathing. A sacrificial fire is caused by human endeavor; hence this description.

She compares Rāma to water and her grief to sacrificial fire.
