Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 32: Rāma Gives Away His Wealth Before Departing
Text 2.32.21
मेखलीनां महासङ्घः कौसल्यां समुपस्थितः। तेषां सहस्रं सौमित्रे प्रत्येकं सम्प्रदापय॥
mekhalīnāṁ mahā-saṅghaḥ kausalyāṁ samupasthitaḥ teṣāṁ sahasraṁ saumitre pratyekaṁ sampradāpaya
mekhalīnām = of brahmacārīs; mahā-saṅghaḥ = a large gathering; kausalyām = before Queen Kausalyā; samupasthitaḥ = have assembled; teṣām = of them; sahasram = a thousand cows; saumitre = Lakṣmaṇa; pratyekam = each; sampradāpaya = arrange to give.
Lakṣmaṇa, a large gathering of brahmacārīs have assembled before Queen Kausalyā. Arrange to give each of them a thousand cows.
1 The final items of charity in the previous verse were cows.
These brahmacārīs wore mauñjī [belts]. Sahasram here indicates that each of them should be given a thousand cows. That they should be given cows is clear from the context.1
