Chapter 33: Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa Depart to Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.33.14

पीडया पीडितं सर्वं जगदस्य जगत्पतेः।
मूलस्येवोपघातेन वृक्षः पुष्पफलोपगः॥

pīḍayā pīḍitaṁ sarvaṁ jagad asya jagat-pateḥ
mūlasyevopaghātena vṛkṣaḥ puṣpa-phalopagaḥ

pīḍayā = by tormenting; pīḍitam = is tormented; sarvam = the entire; jagat = universe; asya = this; jagat-pateḥ = Lord of the universe; mūlasya = the root [of a tree]; iva = just as; upaghātena = by injuring; vṛkṣaḥ = the tree; puṣpa-phala-upagaḥ = with its flowers and fruits [is injured].

By tormenting this Lord of the universe, the entire universe is tormented, just as by injuring the root [of a tree], the tree with its flowers and fruits [is injured].

The torment of the Lord of the universe Rāma lay in exiling Him.
