Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.16
स राजा पुत्रमायान्तं दृष्ट्वा दुरात्कृताञ्जलिम्।
उत्पपातासनात्तुर्णमार्तः स्रीजनसंवृतः॥
sa rājā putram āyāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā dūrāt kṛtāñjalim
utpapātāsanāt tūrṇam ārtaḥ strī-jana-saṁvṛtaḥ
saḥ = the; rājā = king; putram = his son; āyāntam = approaching him; dṛṣṭvā = seeing; dūrāt = from a distance; kṛta-añjalim = with His palms joined in supplication; utpapāta = stood up; āsanāt = from his seat; tūrṇam = quickly; ārtaḥ = anguished; strī-jana-saṁvṛtaḥ = surrounded by his wives.
Seeing his son approaching him from a distance with His palms joined in supplication, the anguished king, surrounded by his wives, quickly stood up from his seat.
GLOSS. [The glossator reads dṛṣṭvācārāt instead of dṛṣṭvā dūrāt indicating that] Daśaratha followed the behavior of the civilized [by getting up to meet Rāmacandra now].
