Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.59
फलानि मूलानि च भक्षयन्वने गिरींश्च पश्यन्सरितः सरांसि च।
वनं प्रविश्यैव विचित्रपादपं सुखी भविष्यामि तवास्तु निर्वृतिः॥
phalāni mūlāni ca bhakṣayan vane
girīṁś ca paśyan saritaḥ sarāṁsi ca
phalāni = fruits; mūlāni = roots; ca = and; bhakṣayan = eating; vane = in the forest; girīn ca = mountains; paśyan = seeing; saritaḥ = rivers; sarāṁsi = lakes; ca = and; vanam = the forest; praviśya eva = I will enter and; vicitra-pādapam = filled with variegated trees; sukhī = happy; bhaviṣyāmi = become; tava astu nirvṛtiḥ = so be happy.
Eating fruits and roots in the forest, seeing mountains, rivers and lakes, I will enter the forest filled with variegated trees and become happy. So be happy!
Rāma intended to tell His father, “Don’t worry that I will be unhappy.”
