ततो निर्धूय सहसा शिरो निश्वस्य चासकृत्।
पाणिं पाणौ विनिष्पिष्य दन्तान्कटकटाप्य च॥
लोचने कोपसंरक्ते वर्णं पूर्वोचितं जहत्।
कोपाभिभूतः सहसा सन्तापमशुभं गतः॥
मनः समीक्षमाणश्च सूतो दशरथस्य सः।
कम्पयन्निव कैकेय्या हृदयं वाक्छरैः शितैः॥
वाक्यवज्रैरनुपमैर्निर्भिन्दन्निव चाशुगैः।
कैकेय्याः सर्वमर्माणि सुमत्रः प्रत्यभाषत॥

Then Sumantra suddenly [regained his consciousness and] shook his head. While continuously sighing [deeply], he rubbed his hands together and gnashed his teeth. His eyes became red with anger. His body’s complexion changed from its usual color. Suddenly overcome by rage and in intense anguish, the charioteer then examined Daśaratha’s mind and spoke using sharp arrowlike words that seemed to shake up Kaikeyī’s heart. He appeared to pierce all of Kaikeyī’s vital spots with matchless and thunderboltlike words that flew rapidly like arrows.

Sumantra gave up his natural complexion [because of his great anger], that is, his body became red due to his anger. He examined Daśaratha’s mind and understood that it was devoid of affection for Kaikeyī [now]. “He appeared to pierce all of Kaikeyī’s vital spots with matchless thunderboltlike words that flew rapidly like arrows” means “He exposed her defects that were like her vital spots with his strong words.”
