Chapter 35: Furious Sumantra Criticizes Kaikeyī
Text 2.35.22
नृपश्चोवाच तां देवीं देवि शंसामि ते यदि।
ततो मे मरणं सद्यो भविष्यति न संशयः॥
nṛpaś covāca tāṁ devīṁ devi śaṁsāmi te yadi
tato me maraṇaṁ sadyo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
nṛpaḥ ca = the king; uvāca = told; tām = the; devīm = queen; devi = O queen; śaṁsāmi = I tell this; te = you; yadi = if; tataḥ me = I; maraṇam = die; sadyaḥ = immediately; bhaviṣyati = will; na = there is no; saṁśayaḥ = doubt about it.
The king told the queen, “O queen, if I tell you this, I will immediately die. There is no doubt about it.”1
1 From this it can be inferred that the yogī who granted the king the benediction had also warned him that if he were to disclose this, he would die.
